Mayor of Absecon, New Jersey

Absecon, New Jersey operates under the city form of New Jersey municipal government, led by a Mayor and a seven-member City Council. The City Council consists of six members elected from the city's two wards to three-year terms on a staggered basis, with one seat from each ward up for election each year, along with one member elected at-large to a four-year term in office, all of whom are elected on a partisan basis as part of the November general election.

  • John R. Armstrong, January 1, 2013 to the present. His term of office ends December 31, 2020.
  • Peter C. Elco, January 1, 1989 to December 31, 2012. He was a member of the Democratic party. He was first elected as Mayor in 1988 and served for 24 years. and was added to the New Jersey League of Municipalities Mayors Hall of Fame in 1998. He also taught English at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon until 2006.
  • Orvis R. Leopardi, January 1, 1977 to December 31, 1988. He served for 12 years.
  • David S. Hodgson January 1, 1973 to December 31, 1976 (4 years)
  • Joseph L. McGahn January 1, 1969 to December 31, 1972 ( 4 years)
  • Warren C. Irelan November 24, 1954 to Dec. 31, 1968 (14 years, 1 month, 7 days)
  • Franklin D. McCarthy, January 1, 1954 to November 23, 1954 (10 months, 23 days as the acting mayor)

  • James Potter Reilly, January 1, 1941 to December 31, 1950. This was his second term.

  • James Potter Reilly January 1, 1935 to December 31, 1936. This was his first term.

  • Edward Armstrong Wilson, January 1, 1903 to December 31, 1908. Edward Armstrong Wilson was the first Mayor of Absecon, New Jersey. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 2, 1862. He worked as a paper bag manufacturer.
