Mateusz Jakub Terczynski (born March 2, 1996) is a Polish professional tennis player. His nickname is ‘Matt’, and although born in Wroclaw, Poland, has lived in London, England, since 2009. He started playing at the age of six, and turned professional in 2014.
Personal life
Mateusz is the younger son of Arkadiusz Terczynski (Arek), a former engineer, with a Masters in Engineering. At the age of six Mateusz started playing tennis seriously, training with his father in Wroclaw. His father had become an experienced tennis coach, having coached his older brother, Bartosz. He finished primary school and then they moved to London, where Bartosz was studying at the Metropolitan University and playing for the University tennis team. Mateusz continued his education at Cheam High School.
Jeremy Bates, the Director of the Sutton Tennis Academy, invited him to join the Sutton Tennis Academy and train there. Jeremy Bates is a former British Number One and a top 50 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) player. At the Sutton Tennis Academy Mateusz met then tennis coach Neil McAffer, a former New Zealand Number One tennis player, who coached him for a year.
In April 2011 Arek opened his own Tennis Academy, The Terczynski Tennis Academy (TTA), in Worcester Park, Surrey. Mateusz and his brother still play and train there.
From September 2011 Mateusz started at the Inter High School, an online education college. This meant he could continue his study while practising tennis full-time. It also enabled him to compete in Tennis Europe tournaments and ITF abroad. In 2012 Mateusz took and passed his GCSEs, and began studying A levels in Business and Economics with the Inter High School.
In September 2013 he decided, with his father, that he should turn professional and play tennis full-time.
