Marvin was born on an unknown date, usually speculated to May 5 or July 5, 1925, to Miles Charles Thacker and Annie May Thacker. When he was about 16 or 17 he joined the army in the late years of World War II. He invaded Germany four times. Most details of his service are unknown but one fact known to close relatives is he was never hit by a bullet. A news station from Appalachian News says "Throughout his three years of service (1942-45), Marvin was never physically wounded. However, he lost part of his hearing from operating the gun because he couldn’t use the earplugs that the Army offered them, since he needed to listen for orders during combat."

In an interview from 2011 he states that he was in the Invasion of Normandy. In this interview, he also talks about the Japanese Surrender and his 5 battle stars.

In 2022, he died at the age of 97.
