Mark Hayes (doctor)

Dr Mark Hayes is a British General Practitioner and politician.

He has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for Selby and Ainsty in the 2015 General Election. He worked as a GP in Tadcaster, and was a founding member of the Selby Primary Care Group in 1998. He is currently chief clinical officer for the NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group and has written AbOUT the challenges facing the NHS following the implementation of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

The conflict between his position of the CCG and his political ambition was alleged to be the reason that he did not cast a vote in favour of providing IVF treatment after governing members of the CCG suggested he might be seen to be playing for votes. York CCG is regarded as the least favourable in England for IVF treatment and Hayes was thought to support proposals to start funding some fertility treatment.

It was also reported that when questions were raised about a conflict of interest between the roles, he admitted using NHS resources for his campaign, saying β€˜the CCG will protect me from unwanted media enquiries.’
