Marc Marcel

Marc Marcel (born February 17, 1976) is an American-born spoken word artist, philosopher, motivational poet, speaker, author and psychonaut best known for his performance poetry and philosophies on life. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Marcel began his writing career in Atlanta Georgia, while attending Morris Brown College in 1998. His work is centered on metaphysical and social issues of the modern day, addressing the preconceptions influenced by one’s surroundings through self-awareness.

Early Years

Marcel was diagnosed with dyslexia in Baltimore Maryland at the age of 10, thereafter attending Jemicy School in Owings Mills. Founded by Margaret Rawson, Jemicy School ranges from 1st to 8th grade, and specializes on teaching kids with dyslexia, utilizing creative, multisensory, research-based programs and techniques to develop reading, writing, spelling, and organization skills, preparing students for the intellectual and social challenges of college and life.

Attending multiple high schools and colleges before settling in at Morris Brown College in Atlanta Georgia, Marcel began taking his writing seriously in his junior year of college, after a back injury sidelined him from sports. Being inspired to write the details of his current relationship into a book, he followed up with his second complete book ‘Saint Thomas,’ first in which he published, and started writing poetry shortly after. Needing a passing grade in his poetry literature class, Marcel brought his work to a campus open mic his teacher made available for ‘extra credit.’ Arriving too late to participate, Marcel begged his professor to give him a chance. His professor did not, but took a chance to look over Marc’s work, and in doing so decided to teach the class Marc’s poetry the next few weeks.

After crossing paths with another professor from his college, whom was not only a published author, but a host of a local open mic, he invited Marcel out to perform. In the coming year, he went on to self-publish his novel ‘Saint Thomas’ and poetry book ‘Unchained’ in the year 2000. Although a newly published author, by the end of his first three and a half years of writing, he had complied over 2000 poems and 8 novels.
