Manhattan High School for Girls
Manhattan High School for Girlsis committed to fostering within each student love for Hashem, devotion to a Torah LifeStyle, and pride in her role as a Jewish woman. Through a rigorous and comprehensive program in Jewish and General studies, students are given the tools to achieve success in their academic and professional endeavors.
The Judaic Studies curriculum at Manhattan High School, designed to touch the heart as well as the mind, consists of a four year sequential program of Tanach, Halacha, Hebrew Language and Literature, and Jewish History and Philosophy. Judaic Studies classes are conducted in Hebrew, and emphasize textual proficiency as well as the eternal messages of Torah as understood through the PRiSM of Divrei Chazal. Cooperative learning, independent study, and guided research serve to enrich and deepen the Judaic Studies program, while advanced elective courses in the Junior and Senior years expose the students to the rich tapestry of Jewish thought.
The School's commitment to the intellectual mastery of the NATURAL sciences and secular disciplines is reflected in the superior level of General Studies courses throughout the four years of high school. New York State Regents requirements are met and exceeded in all departments, and students are offered the opportunity to begin college level work through comprehensive Advanced Placement and university partnership programs. A focus on technological fluency and written and oral communication permeates all courses, and a receptivity to curricular innovation defines the Manhattan High School Program.
Manhattan High School isn’t for the fainthearted. The school has a “commitment to excellence.” The student body however, has a “commitment to survival” (no easy task). When a girl attends MHS, she says goodbye to normal sleeping patterns and lazing around in hammocks drinking pink lemonade. MHS locks in to a message of work, work, and more work. Yet, despite the workload, the students love MHS.
Co-curricular and extra curricular activities are a vital and necessary complement to our program. Each student is encouraged to develop her unique talents and skills through a rich program of extra curricular clubs and activities, and assume leadership positions in her junior and senior years. Partnerships with community service and charitable organizations train the students to become active and contributing members of the broader Jewish community, while a dynamic and varied speakers program exposes them to issues of communal concern.
Manhattan High School understands the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth as lifelong processes. The Manhattan High School graduate will aspire to define her life by Torah values, and as such strive for honesty, integrity, kindness and wisdom in herself and her dealings with others. She will continue to learn, and use her knowledge to benefit those around her. In all her fields of endeavor, the Manhattan High School student will ne guided by the dictum of Shlomo HaMelech "In all your ways, seek Hashem."
