Manhala Road

Manhala Road is a strategic and significant regional artery located in the Lahore District of Punjab, Pakistan. It serves as a primary transportation corridor connecting dozens of border villages across the Lahore Cantt Tehsil and Wagah Tehsil with the central urban centers of the provincial capital. Administratively, it is ranked as the third most vital highway in the region, following the Grand Trunk Road and the Canal Bank Road.

Importance

The road serves as a vital lifeline for approximately 38 rural and frontier settlements. While it traverses nearly 35% of the geographical area of the Wagah subdivision, it is equally critical for the agrarian belt of Lahore Cantonment. Residents of these tehsils rely on this infrastructure for access to wholesale markets, tertiary care hospitals, and higher education institutions within Lahore.

Route and jurisdictions

The road begins at the terminal interchange of the Canal Bank Road and proceeds in a south-east direction toward the international border.

Administrative segments

The thoroughfare is divided between two major administrative subdivisions:

  • Lahore Cantt Tehsil segment: The initial stretch facilitates commuters from various villages under the Cantonment authority, linking them to the city's infrastructure.
  • Wagah Tehsil Segment: The eastern portion leads toward the historic town of Manhala Khan Khanan, which acts as the commercial hub and Union Council headquarters.
  • Key localities: Major settlements served by the road include Khaira, Jallo More, Sultanpura, Jallo, Wara Moule Wasian, Wara Awanan, Nathoki, Karanke, Bhaini Sandhwan, and Padhana.

Infrastructure and challenges

Despite its socio-economic importance, the road FACES significant urban planning challenges:

  • Traffic density: With over 50,000 daily commuters from both suburbs, the pavement experiences heavy wear and tear.
  • Right-of-way: Official land records indicate a right-of-way of , yet the paved surface is limited to , creating a bottleneck for two-way traffic.
  • Encroachments: Illegal constructions, petrol pumps, and housing schemes have encroached upon the road shoulder, reducing the effective width to and increasing road accidents.
