Maharaj Bada market fires (2015–present)
Since 2015, a series of accidental fires have occurred in the commercial and residential areas surrounding Maharaj Bada in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. The locality includes several historic markets such as Khasgi Bazar, Daulatganj, Chawri Bazar and Naya Bazar.
Due to dense population, narrow lanes and mixed residential–commercial structures, the area has witnessed multiple fire incidents in recent years. Fire safety experts and local authorities have repeatedly expressed concerns about illegal storage of flammable materials, electrical faults and the operation of small manufacturing units inside residential buildings.
Background
Maharaj Bada is the historic commercial centre of Gwalior and one of the busiest markets in the city. The area contains several old multi-storey buildings with shops on lower floors and residential apartments above.
According to municipal authorities and media reports, many buildings in the area house small industrial units such as textile processing, thread manufacturing and storage warehouses. The presence of combustible materials and LPG cylinders increases the risk of fires in the densely populated locality.
2018 industrial fire
In June 2018, a major fire broke out in an industrial unit in Gwalior district. The blaze spread to nearby properties and destroyed several vehicles parked in a service facility. Property worth crores of rupees was reportedly damaged, though no casualties were reported.
2025 Khasgi Bazar fire
On 10 April 2025, a major fire broke out in the Kalān Gopal building located in Khasgi Bazar, near Maharaj Bada. The fire reportedly started in a thread-manufacturing unit located in the basement of the building.
The blaze spread rapidly to upper floors of the four-storey building and was intensified by the explosion of several LPG cylinders stored inside the premises.
Seven families living in the building evacuated safely. Firefighters from the Gwalior Municipal Corporation and units from the nearby Indian Air Force station assisted in controlling the blaze. Two firefighters sustained burn injuries during the operation.
2026 Daulatganj Balabai Bazar house fire
On 8 March 2026, a major fire broke out in a residential building belonging to a businessman in the Daulatganj–Balabai Bazar area near Maharaj Bada.
According to reports, six members of the family were inside the house when the fire erupted. Firefighters and police personnel broke windows and carried out rescue operations, saving five people from the building. One woman sustained severe burn injuries and later died during treatment. More than ten fire brigade vehicles were deployed to control the blaze, and an investigation was launched into the cause of the fire.
Causes
Investigations into fires in the Maharaj Bada market area have frequently cited the following factors:
- Electrical short circuits
- Unsafe storage of LPG cylinders
- Combustible materials such as textiles, plastics and cardboard
- Industrial or manufacturing units operating inside residential buildings
Emergency response challenges
Firefighting operations in the Maharaj Bada region are often complicated by narrow market lanes and heavy congestion. These factors make it difficult for fire tenders to access the site quickly. In major incidents, additional firefighting units from nearby installations such as the Indian Air Force station in Maharajpura have assisted local authorities.
Safety concerns
Following repeated incidents, municipal authorities and fire safety experts have called for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations, including:
- Removal of illegal industrial units from residential buildings
- Regular fire safety inspections in markets
- Installation of fire extinguishers and alarms
- Regulation of LPG cylinder storage in commercial areas
