Maddox Gallery
Maddox Gallery is a West London based chain of contemporary art galleries, with their flagship gallery located at 9 Maddox Street, London.
They display work from blue chip artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, but have also built a reputation for sourcing and exhibiting [...]-edge art from internationally acclaimed emerging artists, such as Bradley Theodore and Retna.
Location
Maddox Gallery is situated at 9 Maddox Street, Mayfair, W1S 2QE. It is housed over four floors of a Victorian townhouse which has been renovated to show the gallery's modern art collection.
In December 2016, following a highly successful first year, Maddox Gallery opened its second gallery at 5 Shepherd Street in Mayfair’s Shepherd Market.
In September 2017, a third gallery was opened at 112 Westbourne Grove, London, W2 5RU.
James Nicholls
James Nicholls is Managing Director and Curator of Maddox Gallery. As an internationally recognised investment art specialist, he is the art critic for London Live (TV channel) as well as an art contributor to an extensive range of international publications and television programmes. On British Airways inflight entertainment, James has been featured for several years as the investment art expert in all the long-haul programmes. He is also a patron of both Royal Academy of Arts and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Controversies
In April 2016, Maddox Gallery displayed the controversial [...] picture of Donald Trump, entitled Make America Great Again, by the Los Angeles-based artist Ilma Gore. The pastel piece had been banned from public display in the US and removed from Facebook for breaching the site’s nudity ban. (Citation needed)Gore is also said to have received death threats.
Maddox Gallery also featured on international news channels in August 2016. UK artist Bran Symondson was prevented from bringing his artworks fashioned from decommissioned AK-47 assault rifles into the US, where they were due to be shown at a pop-up exhibition in Houston.
Media support for the Arts
In May 2017 Maddox Gallery were announced as key sponsor of the Artist of the Year category at the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2017, held on 5 September at the Tate Modern art gallery in London. The category was won by German photographer and former Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans, with the award presented to him by Canadian fashion model, spokesperson and activist Winnie Harlow
In announcing Maddox Gallery as the category sponsor, Dylan Jones, editor of British GQ was quoted as saying: “We are delighted to partner with Maddox Gallery for this important Award category. Editorially, the art scene has long been a vital component of the GQ DNA and as evidence of our continued commitment to honour talent in this field, we’re looking forward to celebrating artistic excellence at this year’s ceremony.”

Charitable work
On Thursday November 3, 2014, Maddox Gallery held a contemporary art auction for the charity Caudwell Children which raised more than £200,000. Artworks from the Maddox Gallery stable of artists were auctioned at the charity event in the Mayfair gallery with proceeds of £201,000 being raised for Caudwell Children, a charity established by English businessman and philanthropist John Caudwell, which works to transform the lives of disabled children across the UK.
Artists including Bradley Theodore, Robi Walters, Dan Baldwin, Simafra, Finn Stone, Lincoln Townley, Massimo Agostinelli, Bran Symondson, Michael Moebius, Chris Moon, Retna and Tony Kelly (photographer) generously donated unique artworks for the auction event, which was attended by many of the artists, the gallery’s collectors and supporters of Caudwell Children.
Royal visit
On Wednesday November 2, 2016, HRH Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited the gallery to view the ORO exhibition by Colombian conceptual painter Pedro Ruiz. She was accompanied by Colombian First Lady María Clemencia Rodríguez Múnera as part of the first ever State visit to the UK by Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos. Following the visit, James Nicholls said it had been an honour to work with the Colombian Embassy to arrange the visit and that the staff had been delighted to welcome a Royal and the First Lady to the gallery.
