M stik

m:stik is a fixed mobile convergence service, which combines mobile and Internet communications. It enables users to equip their Internet-connected desktop or laptop computer with the functions of the mobile phone and use it for making and accepting voice calls, use SMS and MMS messaging, and video telephony.

The service was made available at the end of November 2007 by Mobitel, a Slovenian mobile services provider. It aims to ensure unified services and user identity on various devices in the mobile and internet world. The service is available to Mobitel’s subscribers. Calls made through m:stik abroad are charged by the same rates as in Mobitel’s home network, and received calls are free of charge. The m:stik service also enables users to use the short MPO numbers of business virtual private mobile networks, when making and receiving calls at home or abroad.

The service was developed in cooperation with Mobitel by Iskratel in cooperation with BridgePort Networks and Oberthur Card System.

M:stik device

The m:stik device is a USB key with an integrated SIM or a USIM card. It consists of U3 system, that enables portable use of applications from an USB key. The integrated SIM card cannot be replaced.

Usage

The hardware and software is located on an USB key, and no software needs to be preinstalled on a computer. The PIN code of the mobile phone must be enetered on start.

When connected, the application redirects user's calls and messages to a SIP client in the computer. The user interface in is Slovene and resembles a mobile handset.

Synchronization with Microsoft Outlook is possible.

Technology

The service connects the mobile network and the internet through the SIP (session initiaton protocol).
