Lyall A. Gorenstein, MD, is the Surgical Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Gorenstein has received recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Thoracic Surgery in 2001 and 2004, and has been featured in Hudson Valley Magazine’s Top Doctors in 2006 and 2007 (CC 2007).

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)

Dr. Gorenstein is amongst the group of physicians who pioneered video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)at Columbia (CPMC 2006). VATS is a minimally invasive procedurethat reduces post operative pain, and eliminates large painful incisions. This therefore allows patients to have shorter hospital stays, and a faster recovery and return to full activity (CS Vats 2007). Dr. Gorenstein and the Columbia team have performed a high volume of minimally invasive VATS procedures. These procedures include pulmonary lobectomy (removal of a lobe of the lung) for lung cancer, mediastinal mass resection (removal of a mass in the central chest), esophagectomy, thymectomy, and phrenic nerve pacemaker insertion (CS Thoracoscopic 2007). Currently, Dr. Gorenstein is involved in a research study to evaluate the immunological impact of VATS, to see if patients might live longer because of less immunosuppression (CS SI 2001).

The Center for Hyperhidrosis

Dr. Gorenstein is also the Director of The Center for Hyperhidrosis at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. For over five years the center has been at the [...] edge of diagnosis and treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). They offer minimally invasive surgeries, including endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS), and have improved such processes overtime by decreasing the incision size and reducing recovery time (Hyperhidrosis 2007).
