Love, Aubrey

Love, Aubrey, by Suzanne LaFleur, is a children's novel AbOUT a young girl recovering from the tragedy of losing her father and sister in an automobile accident, and from the confusion of being abandoned by her grieving mother.

Plot summary

We meet Aubrey at the beginning of the book and learn she has been abandoned to live alone in her own home when her mother disappeared, but we don't know why. Soon Aubrey's Gram arrives to take Aubrey home with her to Vermont. As Aubrey makes sense of her feelings throughout the school year, we come to learn exactly what happened to her and her immediate family.

  • Aubrey: 11-year-old protagonist.
  • Gram: Aubrey's maternal grandmother, who provides the stability in the Aubrey's life necessary for her to come to terms with her loss.
  • Bridget: Aubrey's best friend, who lives next door to Gram in Vermont.
  • Marcus: A friend from school, whose emotional problems help Aubrey gain perspective.
  • Jilly: Aubrey's sister's imaginary friend, to whom Aubrey began writing letters.
  • Amy Carlisle: Aubrey's counselor at school.

  • The story begins with Aubrey living alone at her home in Virginia, then her Gram takes her to live in Vermont.
