List of prime ministers of Canada and premiers of Ontario
This is a list and timeline of prime ministers of Canada and premiers of Ontario. Canada's prime minister serves as The Primary minister of the Crown, chair of the Cabinet, and head of government of Canada, while the British monarch serves as head of state under representation from the governor general. The premier of Ontario is the head of provincial government, first minister, and the chair of the Executive Council (provincial cabinet). Both positions are defined as the leader of the party or coalition of parties with the most seats in their respective legislature, with its confidence. The intergovernmental relationship between Canada's largest province and the confederation itself are central to the political, economic, and social state of the country at large, as Ontario is home to 38.5% of the national population, beating out second-place Quebec by 15.5 percentage points, and responsible for 38.2% of the national GDP, once again beating out Quebec by 18.4 percentage points. The country's capital, Ottawa, where the federal government convenes at Parliament Hill, is also located in Ontario.
The longest concurrently serving pair are the country's first prime minister John A. Macdonald and the province's third premier Oliver Mowat, former Kingston law partners who held their respective offices for 12 years, 7 months, and 20 days straight from October 17, 1878 to June 6, 1891. John A. Macdonald was also part of the inaugural pair, alongside John Sandfield Macdonald (no relation), who he helped manoeuvre into the position. They served together for 4 years, 5 months, and 5 days between July 16, 1867 and December 20, 1871. Ontario was officially without premier for the first fifteen days of Canadian Confederation. William Lyon Mackenzie King served with a record 7 different premiers (Drury, Ferguson, Hepburn, Conant, Nixon, Drew, and Kennedy), while Oliver Mowat also served with the first 7 prime ministers (Macdonald, Mackenzie, Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, Tupper, and Laurier). The current holders are Mark Carney and Doug Ford, since March 14, 2025.
