- 2006 On May 7, 2006, the Associated Press reported that the last American survivor of the sinking of the Titanic, Lillian Gertrud Asplund, had died the day before at her home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Asplund, who was just 5 years old at the time of the incident, lost her father and three brothers — including a fraternal twin; however, Asplund's mother, Selma, and another brother, Felix, who was 3, survived the Titanic sinking. Selma Asplund died on the anniversary of the sinking in 1964. The Associated Press also reported that Asplund was believed to be the last Titanic survivor with actual memories of the sinking since the remaining two survivors were too young to remember the disaster.2
