Other LiveJournals have instead gained notoriety for the infamy of their owners. These include:

  • Taylor Behl, username tiabliaj, a seventeen-year-old Virginia college student found murdered
  • Ben Fawley, username skulz67, Behl's killer. On August 9, 2006, Fawley was convicted by a judge of second degree [...] and sentenced to thirty years in prison, after Fawley entered an Alford plea.
  • Jason Fortuny, username rfjason, a Seattle-area graphic designer responsible for "The Craigslist Experiment".
  • John Dallas Lockhart, username ohbutyouwillpet, a 38-year-old Akron lawyer who was found to possess pictures of himself raping a four-month-old infant on his computer. After a profile on America's Most Wanted, he was arrested by the LAPD and U.S. Marshals Service in the Venice Beach neighborhood of Los Angeles and extradited to Ohio, where he gave a plea of guilty and was sentenced to life in prison in 2005; he will be eligible for parole beginning in 2015.5
  • Russell Tavares, username pyrodice, got a leave of absence from his assignment with the U. S. Navy working with missles and fire control, drove from Virginia to Waco, Texas, and set fire to the house of a man with whom he had engaged in an Internet flame war, completely destroying the house. On July 23, 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony arson and was sentenced to seven years in state prison. (He has been discharged by the Navy; his journal has been deleted and the user name purged from the LiveJournal servers.) 67
  • Jeff Weise, username weise, a high school student in Red Lake, Minnesota responsible for the Red Lake High School massacre.

LiveJournals that have had an impact on the offline world

Some instances of LiveJournal having a wider impact on the outside world. These include:

  • homeless_at_nyu. In 2004, homeless New York University (NYU) student Steve Stanzak gained nationwide attention. Stanzak had lived in the NYU library for eight months, being unable to afford the expensive cost of housing, and chronicled his plight in his LiveJournal. His weblog ultimately caught the attention of the media and school administration, who provided him with temporary free housing and increased his financial aid. The journal has since been deleted by the owner.
  • interdictor. Michael Barnett, an internet company's crisis manager who witnessed Hurricane Katrina firsthand from a datacenter in the Central Business District of New Orleans and documented it in his blog, becoming famous virtually overnight.
  • ea_spouse. In 2004, Erin Hoffman, the spouse of an employee who worked at Electronic Arts wrote an article entitled "EA: The Human Story" revealed the terrible working conditions at EA. It sparked a lawsuit which the employees won for $15.6 million for unpaid overtime.
