List of fictional books within the Harry Potter series

This is a List of fictional books mentioned in the Harry Potter series. Fictional books (not to be confused with novels) have a well-established pedigree as literary devices, having been used in a number of ways. Author J. K. Rowling, like fellow fantasy authors J.R.R. Tolkien and Susanna Clarke, uses them to help establish a richly textured fictional setting for her stories.

In the Harry Potter books, young Harry lives in a world where witchcraft and wizardry are common (though not flaunted) abilities. Rowling makes this world more believable by Providing a history and mythology that form an appropriate context for these abilities. This history and mythology is embodied in invented, or fictional, books, which include biographies of famous witches and wizards, How-to manuals for Quidditch and dragon-raising, histories of troll and giant wars, and so on.

Books in general make regular appearances in the Potter series. Students are frequently seen studying, often in the Hogwart's Library; the three main characters (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) must pore through books to research topics both for school and for their own purposes; and the Forbidden Section of the library houses some highly unusual volumes. Some of the books listed below are mentioned only in passing, others are quoted from at length, while a few—such as Tom Riddle's diary—play a significant role in the development and resolution of the plot.

Rowling has since written and published two of these originally fictional books, Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, under the noms de plume Kennilworthy Whisp and Newt Scamander, respectively.
