It was this machine which brought Venser to the attention of Teferi and Jhoira, who were trying to figure out a way to heal the time rifts. It soon became apparent to them that Venser was far more than he appeared or was even aware. The artificer was, in fact, the first of a new breed of planeswalker, who could walk the planes as a mortal and who would be immune to the shift that the multiverse was about to undertake. Venser eventually learned to teleport and planeswalk on command. (Card: , , , .)

He then left to fend for himself by being a wandering warrior. He formed the infamous Otarian Cabal when the numena Kuberr appeared before him in a dream. He promised him many blessings for every life spilled. He took on many gangs and killed their leaders. The members became the first members of his "club". With all the money acquired from their activities, the Cabal created the first of the pit-fighting arenas, thus ensuring Kuberr souls for his bloated coffers. In return the numena gave Virot longevity and near-indestructibility similar to a planeswalker, as well as the touch that can kill and absorb souls. The Patriarch attempted to use his touch to kill Jeska, sister to Kamahl. Unexpectedly, she not only survived but developed a persona, known as Phage, and abilities similar to his own. Phage and the Patriarch would conceive a child together which became the physical incarnation of Kuberr. Virot's enterprise lived for centuries, with its leader's life secure as long as its patron was satisfied. It met its degradation after Virot died, when Braids killed her own leader. (Odyssey)
