She was the first openly gay housemate in Big Brother history, and the only gay housemate in Big Brother 1. While in the house, she had close relationships with the majority of the housemates, as she managed to avoid conflict throughout the course of the show. She had close friendships mostly with the women in the early weeks, mainly Sada and Caroline. Following their evictions, Anna and Nichola became good friends. Anna was also friendly with Melanie, who the majority of the females disliked. Anna managed to not receive any nomination votes during the first three nominations, and only received one vote during the fourth. She was nominated in the sixth week along with Craig, Darren, and Thomas, with the latter being evicted. This was Anna's only time being nominated for eviction, and she made it to the Final Two after surviving that vote. She had close friendships with Sada and Nichola, as well as Anna and Darren. She didn't get along with Melanie, who she felt had betrayed her during the first week. Despite these feelings, Caroline often acted as though she like Melanie. Caroline also engaged in numerous arguments with housemate Craig, but the two later revealed a liking for one another when he comforted her while she was upset. Caroline was nominated on Day 11, alongside her good friend Sada. Caroline had received five nomination votes that week, all of which came from the men in the house. She later survived the eviction, receiving 45% of the public vote to evict. On Day 18, Caroline was nominated for a second consecutive time, this time against Andrew. She received five nomination votes that week as well. On Day 22, it was announced she had survived this eviction as well, and had only received 32% of the public vote to evict. She quickly had a close friendship and flirtatious relationship with housemate Craig, and had a somewhat friendly relationship with the others in the house. She was almost immediately at odds with Melanie as Claire often flirted with the men in the house. It was noted by the psychiatrist who narrate part of the series that Melanie felt threatened by Claire's presence, and was even more threatened as Claire blatantly flirted with Thomas in the house. She admitted on her second night in the house that she had underwent a breast augmentation prior to entering the game. Claire was nominated on Day 46 in the house, the first week she was eligible to be nominated. Though she was initially nominated in a four way tie, a change in voting later led to her being nominated only against good friend Craig. Claire was evicted on Day 50, receiving 79% of the public vote. This is the highest percentage for any eviction this season. Following her appearance on the series, she had a romantic relationship with housemate Thomas. The two went on to have one child together, but did not get married. They eventually split up. While at one point, the two nearly came to blows in an argument over Craig's apparent lack of work around the house, he later comforted her in a moment of sadness. Melanie
Melanie Hill (born 18 January 1974) was from North London. She was very close to her mother, who she lived with, though her father left when she was young. She achieved further education and gained a Psychology and cognitive science degree from Sussex University. Before entering the Big Brother house Melanie worked as a salesperson in the Computer industry. Previously Melanie has worked in the civil service and also as a buyer for a jewellery firm. While in the house, Melanie was seen as flirtatious. During the first week, when the gender division in the house was strong, Melanie bonded better with the men, and chose to nominate a woman for eviction. This led to Sada and Caroline's nominations that week, with Sada ultimately being evicted. This led to Melanie's former friend Caroline to become upset with her, with Caroline stating she felt Melanie had turned on her. Melanie had flirtatious relationships with all of the men in the house. She had a more serious relationship with Andrew, with the two sharing their first kiss in the house on Day 21. Following Andrew's eviction, Melanie formed a closer bond with Thomas, and he often gave her sensual massages. The two shared their first kiss on Day 43, after it was announced Thomas had been evicted from the house. She had a close friendship with Nick in the house, but later turned on him when it was exposed that he had been cheating by attempting to influence the nominations. Melanie failed to have good relationships with the other women in the house, but did have a somewhat decent relationship with openly gay housemate Anna. Melanie managed to escape being nominated during the first five nomination processes. On Day 46, Melanie was slated to be nominated for eviction alongside Claire, Craig and Darren. A problem with the voting, however, led to each housemate being allowed to redo their nominations. When Darren changed his nominations, only Claire and Craig were nominated that week, meaning Melanie was safe from eviction. The following week, however, Melanie was nominated for eviction against Craig. She was ultimately evicted on Day 57, receiving 69% of the public vote. She came in 4th place.
Nick
Nicholas "Nick" Bateman (born 5 November 1967 in London, England) grew up in Kent with his four sisters. Bateman worked in the City of London for nine years as a broker for the Willis Group from 1991. Nick proved to be quite popular in the house, with none of his fellow housemates giving him a nomination vote during his time in the house. He had close friendships with Tom and Melanie, but tried to be friendly with everyone to avoid nominations. Each week, he claimed he had visions in his dreams about who would be leaving the game, and successfully predicted the outcome of the first four evictions. During his stay, Nick hid his cigarettes from his fellow housemates, who had run out by the third week in the house. Melanie, however, found out that he was hiding them, but she did not reveal this to the others. He frequently lied in the house, and as seen in the first week, delivered similar statements to the majority of the housemates. During the first week, he lied about his "secret wife" dying in a car accident, though he later revealed to Tom and Melanie that the story was fake. His lies and gameplay made him the least popular housemate outside of the house. At one point, various leaflets were dropped over the house asking the housemates to nominate Nick for eviction, though production got rid of them before they were spotted. He was the center of much controversy in the house. It was speculated that he had smuggled in a cell phone, and various newspapers began reporting the rumor as fact. This prompted security to search his belongings, during which they found no phone. On Day 35, Nick was ejected from the house after it was revealed that he had been influencing other housemates nominations by writing names on a sheet of paper. Housemates Craig and Thomas revealed that Nick had attempted to influence their vote, and Big Brother had scolded him numerous times on the subject of talking about nominations. He was removed from the game after Craig and Darren discovered the paper in his belongings and called him out.
After being kicked out of the house Nick signed an exclusive deal with The Sun to tell his story and donated a portion of the fee to charity. The Sun began serialising his story on the Monday after his eviction. For a time after his departure from the show, Nick enjoyed considerable media exposure and attended many show-business parties and premieres. He went on to present the short-lived television show Trust Me, wrote a book entitled Nasty Nick: How to be a Right [...], and appeared on the reality television series Back to Reality and in the Big Brother pantomime. Following Caroline's eviction, Nichola debated walking from the series, but was convinced to stay in the game. She became closer with Anna after Caroline's eviction, who was a lesbian. Nichola was nominated in the fifth week for eviction, receiving four nomination votes. She was nominated against eventual winner Craig. On Day 36, Nichola was evicted with 72% of the public vote. Tom was nominated against Caroline on Day 25 in the house, receiving four nomination votes from his fellow housemates. He survived the eviction, however, only receiving 38% of the public vote to evict. He was nominated again on Day 39 against Anna, Craig and Darren, receiving three votes that week.
