Fundraising To Serve the Community
All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes, with administration costs kept strictly separate and paid for by members.
The Canberra Woden Club's major fundraising activity is the weekly Sunday Trash and Treasure Southside Canberra Markets held at the Woden Westfield Shopping Centre Carpark located on the corner of Melrose Drive and Hindmarsh Drive. 3
The markets run each Sunday, weather permitting, from 6.30am and close at 1.00pm. Entry fee is 20 cents for adults and stall holders are charged $6.00 per parking bay. Allocation of stalls is on a first come basis each week.
The club also sells Lions Christmas Cakes as part of the annual Lions Christmas Cake sale 4.
Funds raised by the Club support local charities and individuals in need. The club also contributes to Lions International Projects.
Lions Oratory Contest at the Australian National University 5
Since 1998 the Lions Club of Canberra Woden with support from the ANU has sponsored an annual oratory contest for students at the ANU. 6 This event is a unique initiative of the Canberra Woden Lions Club.
The objectives of the Lions Oratory Contest are:
To give an opportunity to students to master and excel in the art of oratory by reading widely on subjects dealing with human virtues.
To create interest in the study of the lives of great women and men who, often at enormous personal sacrifice, realise outstanding achievements which generations to come will emulate. These are people, including Saints and Sages from the whole world, who through their outstanding contributions enhanced the quality of life of all humanity.
To cultivate in students the need for the great human values of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence - the core of all major religions.
2007 Winner - Esther Sainsbury 7 Her speech was on "Moments of Crisis Were to Become a Way of Exploring and Testing Character".
