Lilium (song)

"Lilium" is the opening theme song for the anime Elfen Lied. It is based on several biblical passages (lines 1-2: Ps 36:30; lines 3-5: Jm 1:12) and the hymn Ave mundi spes Maria ("Hail Mary, Hope of the World") in Biblical Latin. The lyrics and melody are authored by Kayo Konishi and Yukio Kondou, after being requested to make the song like a Gregorian chant, and was performed by Kumiko Noma.

Intro Version

Lyrics (Intro)

Os, iusti meditabitur sapientiam,
Et lingua eius loquetur iudicium,
Beatus vir qui suffert tentationem
Quia cum probatus fuerit accipiet coronam vitae
Kyrie, ignis divine, eleison,
O quam sancta, quam serena
Quam benigna, quam amoena
O castitatis lilium

English Translation (Intro)

The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks what is just.
Blessed is the man who endures temptation
For when he has overcome the trial
He shall receive the crown of life.
Oh Lord, Fire Divine, have mercy!
Oh, How Holy! How Serene!
How Kind! How Pleasant!
Oh Lilly of Chastity!

Saint Version

Can be found played during the last episode, during the final conversation between Lucy and Kouta.

Lyrics (Saint)

Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam
Et lingua eius loquetur iudicium
Beatus vir qui suffert tentationem
Quoniam cum probatus fuerit
Accipiet coronam vitae
Kyrie, fons bonitatis
Kyrie, Ignis Divine, Eleison
O quam sancta, quam serena
Quam benigna, quam amoena
Esse virgo creditur
O quam sancta, quam serena
Quam benigna, quam amoena
O castitatis lilium

English Translation (Saint)

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom,
And his tongue shall speak judgment.
Blessed is the man who endures temptation,
For when he has been tried,
He shall receive the crown of life.
O Lord, fountain of goodness
O Lord, o Divine Fire, have mercy!
O how sacred, how fair,
How kind, how delightful
The maiden is believed to be.
O how sacred, how fair,
How kind, how delightful,
O lily of chastity.
