Light of the World (music)
Light of the World, subtitled "A Celebration of Life, Spirit of Man, Glory of God" is the the name of the stage production created and performed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in February 2002 during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. A double album by the same name contains the recording of the production.
During the XIX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints performed 7 evening and 3 matinee showings free of charge. The production featured a domed stage with AbOUT 1,500 dancers and performers from all over the world (mostly Church membership) accompanied by orchestral music and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir which also appeared in part of the production walking out onto the domed stage.
The music was specifically written by members of the Church for this performance. The performance touches on topics such as the music from around the world, the persevering spirit of the Mormon Pioneers and the brotherhood of mankind. Special effects include actors flying as high as 70 feet above the stage and images of stars and planets projected onto the great sheer curtain that curved around the domed stage as the audience enters into the theater. The production was performed in the 21,000 seat Conference Center.
