Lexwiser is an online collaboration tool for lawyers. Founded in 2003 and launched in December 2009, it is mainly used for professional networking between lawyers.

Company information

Founder Eric Eck was previously commercial sales executive for US based legal publisher Martindale-Hubbell and then consultant for the International Sales and Marketing team at Thomson Reuters in London, where he supported the roll out of Westlaw to continental Europe.

Eric then set up Lexwiser to deliver products and services to legal industry clients to support collaboration and transparency in the way work is assigned, priced and processed. The business is based in Rosheim, France and supported by a team of English, French and German speaking professionals.

Membership

The user base of Lexwiser is currently unknown, but estimates as of January 2010 put the figure at less than a thousand. However, unlike other online tools used for business networking, such as LinkedIn, Lexwiser is intended for lawyers only - therefore the potential user base is significantly smaller than that of a collaboration tool available to the general public.

The service is aimed at the day-to-day needs of in-house counsel (corporate lawyers) and private practice lawyers (lawyers at law firms).

Features

Lexwiser presents itself as the only 'independent' collaborative solution available to the legal community, in a marketplace predominantly backed by private practices or legal publishers with vested interests in the content and use of their systems.

Lexwiser's community structure is also seen as a unique feature. The "ring-fenced approach" (where contact with any lawyer requires either a preexisting relationship, or the sharing of the same area of expertise) is intended to build trust among the service's users. Lexwsier participates in EU's International Safe Harbor Privacy Principles.
