Lelio La Tanza

Emanuele La Tanza (better known as Lelio La Tanza; Taranto, 28 February 1954) is an Italian percussionist and drummer. Self-taught , he has been playing percussions since the age of five. At the age of eleven, he advanced to the study of drum kit thanks to his father's American friends, who loved blues, jazz and swing. Lelio La Tanza’s style is supported by a superb, elegant and refined technique, recognizable in the various genres he plays, such as bossa nova, jazz, blues, swing, fusion and above all afro-jazz, the style La Tanza loves the most.

In 1976, he had the honor of playing in the orchestra of the "King of the Mambo", Perez Prado, for eighteen concerts.

During his career he has worked, as sessionman with many Italian and international artists, such as Mariella Nava, James Senese, the above mentioned Perez Prado, Pino Daniele, Tony Esposito, Nuccy Guerra, Irio de Paula, Pasquale Calò (jazz guitarist), Enzo Lanzo, Fabio Rogoli, Fausto Alimeni, Roberto Cati, Massimo D'Astore, Dario Pinelli, Andrea Esperti, Sandro Napolitano, Raffaele Vaccaro, Agostino Marangolo, Joe Amoruso.

Since 1993 he has been teaching at his "Scuola d'Arte Ritmica di Lelio La Tanza", located in Manduria (Italy), where he lives. The main instruments taught in his school are: congas, bongos, djembe, timbales and drum kit.

Right now, Lelio La Tanza is working on several musical projects with famous artists like the well-known jazz manouche guitarist Dario Pinelli, jazz pianist Claudio Rollo, jazz double bass player Achille Matricardi, jazz guitarist Pasquale Calò and senegalese singer/percussionist Farba, who was on the stage with the famous mbalax singer Youssou N'Dour.
