Larry M. Buchanan

Larry M. Buchanan, Ed.D. is an educator and served as Superintendent of the Grant Joint Union High School District from 1999-2007.

Biography

Larry M. Buchanan served as deputy superintendent at Modoc County Office of Education from 1983-1987. In 1985 he received his Ed.D. from the USC Rossier School of Education in 1985. He was director of fiscal services at Chino USD from 1988-1990, and served as associate superintendent at Calaveras COE from 1990-1998.

In 1998, Dr. Buchanan joined Grant Joint Union High School District as an assistant superintendent for business services. The following year, the board of trustees promoted him to interim superintendent and then became the district's official superintendent.

Work with Stewardship in Non-Traditional Educational Leadership

In 2004 Dr. Buchanan authored the paper "The Emerging Role of Stewardship in Non-Traditional Educational Leadership", which he presented at the Oxford Round Table at St. Antony's College in the University of Oxford. {{Cite conference

On April 24, 2005 Dr. Buchanan presented a seminal speech on school culture and stewardship at the Victoria Round Table

California Superintendent of the Year 2005

In 2005 the Association of California School Administrators chose Dr. Buchanan as the California Superintendent of the Year. He was chosen for the academic improvement in the district which is credited to reforms he helped implement using a stewardship approach, standards-based education his administration implemented and leadership in using technology.

Retirement

On August 16, 2007 Larry Buchanan announced his retirement as Superintendent from the Grant District which occurred at the end of September. He will continue to work in other capacities until June. Patricia Newsome was named the interim superintendent.
