Lana Zangana
Lana Zangana,( لانه زەنگەنە) born October 2nd1989, is a prominent Kurdish singer and entrepreneur. Lana Zangana debuted with “Nehni Ewin” in Kurdistan in 2013. Lana Zangana chooses her music and lyrics carefully. She shares the belief that music is very important for the preservation of culture and language. Her Kurdish roots, specifically, were preserved by the music she used to listen to as a child in Iraq and The Netherlands.
Early life
Lana Zangana was born in Kirkuk, Kurdistan on October the 2nd, 1989. Her father was born in Kirkuk, and her mother in Slemani (Qaradag). Lana Zangana is the third child of a family of four. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Events and Business Management (2011) and graduated her Master-studies in International Business and Management in 2013. Although Lana Zangana was always drawn to music, she decided to finish her Business studies before pursuing her career as a singer. This turned out to be a very wise decision as she is now able to personally manage her own singing career. Her father is a civil engineer and her mother is a school teacher for students with special needs. Lana Zangana is surrounded by a highly creative family. Her oldest brother, Hozan Zangana, is a well-known and respected Designer. Her sister, Hana Zangana, is a writer, poet and editor. Her youngest brother, Hewa Zangana, is a company strategic consultant. Her aunt is the great Kurdish poet, writer and activist Mahabad Qaradagi, who also gave Lana the poem for the first videoclip, “Nehni Ewin”. Lana Zangana is fluent in five language: Dutch, English, Kurdish, Arabic and German. At the age of 7, Lana and her family fled Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath regime and went to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This was a huge change in her life which subsequently shaped her into the creative and strong woman she is now. As a young girl, Lana Zangana enjoyed a happy childhood filled with joyful memories. She was always singing, dancing and putting up shows for her family and friends in the Netherlands. She joined a theatre group, which was the first time she experienced the magic of being on stage. She enjoyed performing in front of a crowd. Although acting was one of her favorite arts, her passion always remained in music. Therefore, she chose to educate herself singing in both Kurdish and Arabic.
Career
At the age of 15, Lana Zangana started developing her professional singing through participation in different national festivals throughout the Netherlands. She sang mostly in Arabic, as it was better known to the Dutch people. Nevertheless, she was later invited to sing in Kurdish on important Kurdish events and for the Dutch Consulate-General in Erbil. Lana Zangana is fluent in singing Arabic with three different dialects, Iraqi, Egyptian and Lebanese, and therefore she has had many videos and concerts on which she sings in both languages, Kurdish and Arabic. Lana Zangana recorded her first video clip, “Nehni Ewin”, which was broadcast on Kurdish television, in 2013. Lana Zangana had recorded her second video clip “Kasi Du Ru” in 2013. Lana Zangana’s third video clip was the live-cover “Mahi min” of the famous Kurdish singer Adnan Karim. Lana’s fourth song called “Bo Detewê” was recorded in Amsterdam in 2016. Later that year Lana Zangana recorded her first hit song “Chopyakat”, which had an astonishing 1.5 Million views within six months. Lana Zangana was the first Kurdish singer ever to reach this amount of views within six months after releasing. On September the 25th 2017, the Kurdish people were asked by the Kurdish government to vote for an independent Kurdistan. Therefore, Lana Zangana recorded her sixth song “Referendum”, in which she brings the subject of an independent Kurdistan under attention.
Lana Zangana has been interviewed by many tv shows in Iraqi Kurdistan and for Arabic TV stations in Lebanon. Lana was on “Jinu Jiyan” on KurdMax, “Like Magazine” on Koshki Net TV, “Ziad gallary”, on “Kmagazin”, “Bernamê şeyda” on WAAR TV and on “Tital” on Rudaw. She was on various Lebanese radio, she was interviewed for an article on “Sayidatynet Magazine”, and many other different media platforms. Lana Zangana has worked together with Mahabad Qaradagi, Halkawt Zaher, Ragheb Alama, Fayez AlSaeed, Rayan, and Karim el Iraki.
Artistry
The music that shaped her as a singer arose from the most influential artists from Kurdistan, Turkey and Arab countries. Therefore, Lana Zangana uses different themes throughout her music, such as pop, techno and modern/romantic.
