La Catrina (educational program)
La Catrina is a mystery-themed educational television series. The series is perhaps more commonly known AbOUT within the United States, where it is viewed in many Spanish classrooms. The series, which is in Spanish, is used by many teachers to increase the language skills of their students. Each episode is approximately ten to fifteen minutes in length.
Season One
The first season, which contains 14 episodes, follows the story of Jamie González, a high school senior from Los Angeles who wins a scholarship to study in Querétaro, México. The series follows Jamie's attempt to learn more about her great-grandmother, known as "La Catrina". Throughout the first season, the mystery unravels as she learns more about how the "La Catrina" legend is related to her family history. Along the way she is helped by her newly made friends, Carlos Navarro, Maria, Felipe Armstrong and Rogelio Salazar. She also makes a life-long enemy in Don Silvestre Aguilar, a powerful and rich man who is in charge of much of Querétaro.
Season Two - El Último Secreto
A second season of the series was made, titled El Último Secreto. Jamie learns of a property her great-grandmother owned and travels to Oaxaca to investigate. Before she leaves, Jamie receives a package containing a coyote sculpture, which she believes is from her friend Carlos in Mexico. This turns out to be more involved in the story than one originally believes when Jamie decides to travel with her friend named Rosie. Together they meet a new friend, Benito López, who helps them along their journey. Trouble ensues when Jamie learns that her old enemy, Don Silvestre Aguilar, is involved illegally with her great-grandmother's Meson Del Jaguar. Soon As the plot unfolds, friendship, love and action intertwine to create a compelling, educational story, and by the end Jamie has found both a new husband, and a new child.
