Early life

Kyle Michael Almoney was born to Byron Almoney and Georgia Shaffer Almoney in York, Pennsylvania. He did not start swimming until he was a teenager, but picked it up quickly while swimming for local teams. He attended Northeastern High School where he emerged as a talented swimmer, breaking several records and winning PIAA state swimming titles. He was the 100 yard butterfly PIAA champion in Class AA in 1997. He briefly attended Mercersburg Academy his junior year, but returned to Northeastern. Unfortunately, he was unable to compete in scholastic competition due to his age. He was nineteen and at the time, this made him ineligible to compete in PIAA sports. This rule has since been changed. He graduated from Northeastern in 1999.

College

Kyle attended West Chester University on a swimming scholarship while majoring in communications. As a member of the Golden Rams swim team, he was a 24-time All-American. He also broke several records and is the current 200 yard butterfly record holder. He was PSAC rookie of the year in 2000. He competed from 1999-2003, and graduated in 2004 with a B.A. in communications.

Coaching career

After graduation, Kyle was an assistant swim coach at Widener University, from 2003-2004 and also an assistand coach at Trident Swim Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He served as head coach of The Lancaster YMCA swim team from 2005-2006 and coached there through 2007. In the fall of 2006, Kyle was named head coach at Millersville University for the women's swim team. He led the Marauders to their first ever undefeated season in the 2006-2007 season. In the 2007-2008 season, Kyle led the team to a 5-4 record. He also started an age group swim program, Marauder Aquatic Club, at the university that competes under USS guidelines and in the Central Penn Aquatic League (CPAL).
