Koray Erdoğan
Koray Erdogan (April 16, 1968) is a Turkish hair transplant surgeon and Vice-President of the World FUE Institute. He has done important work in the field of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) all over Europe.
Early life and career
Erdogan was born in the province of Gemlik in Bursa, to Abdullah, a lawyer, and Nuray, a housewife. Erdogan attended Hacettepe University in 1988, receiving his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine in 1994. After completing his qualifications from Hacettepe University, he went on to Kastamonu to complete his obligatory medical service.
After he completed his service, he started to work as an assistant in the Department Of Thoracic Surgery at Marmara University. Following this, he became a member of the Acibadem Hospital Group, working in the Intensive Care Unit.
In 2000, Erdogan began to develop his skills in the field of hair restoration in private medical clinics. In 2001, he founded his own hair transplantation clinic, and continued to do research and work in this field. In 2004, he developed his own technique for Follicular Unit Extraction. Through his research and work on this technique, he gained notoriety in numerous countries around the world.
Erdogan still continues work in this field at his own clinic ASMED in Istanbul, Turkey.
Groundbreaking work in hair restoration
Sequential Technique in FUE
In 2005, Erdogan noticed through research that surgical FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedures, (the then current technique), were less productive than procedures using the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique. After this, he started to combine both FUT and FUE procedures. His combined technique was one of the first, and therefore became recognized in the field of hair transplantation in Europe and Turkey. Shortly thereafter, (FUE) became the preferred hair transplant surgery.
Through the FUE hair transplant technique developed by Erdogan, individual follicles are extracted one by one, and then transferred directly to the Recipient area individually under local anesthesia.
During the surgical procedure, the individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the donor area using tiny punches. They are then quality checked, and immediately placed in micro-sized slits within the recipient (balding) area, resulting in less damage to the scalp, and less scarring. The technique also shortens the time of transfer of the grafts from the donor area to the recipient area, thereby protecting the integrity of the graft.
Unlike other hair transplant techniques, the Sequential Technique gives the surgeon the opportunity to use both punch and forceps, one in each hand. This also provides the opportunity to perform the procedure more quickly and easily with optimum quality. Erdogan also found that using the DES Technique decreased trauma and transection to grafts.
Coverage density
Coverage density refers to the average number of hair follicles in the area of 1–2 cm and the thickness of the hair. By using this system, Dr. Erdogan has succeeded in transplanting the highest number of grafts during the longest FUE transplant sessions on record.
Graft Calculator
Graft Calculator is an application that provides the opportunity to calculate and help identify the areas where more hair is required. As a result, the surgeon can obtain better coverage, and create a more homogeneous look. It also helps the medical staff in estimating how many grafts a patient will needs for their procedure, and the approximate cost.
Workshops and meetings
Erdogan, who is highly recognized in the field of hair implantation as a result of his research and work, has attended and spoken at many workshops, conferences and meetings, and has shared his professional experience and knowledge with other specialists in the field.
