Early life

King Sis was raised in the Washington metropolitan area. Her stage name is derived from her nickname "Sis" which was given to her by her father. She grew up in a musical family as the granddaughter of a pastor, and began singing and performing in church during childhood. Mills has referenced her early exposure to gospel music as formative to her vocal development. During her youth, she studied piano and participated in school and community music activities. After completing high school, Mills co-founded two gospel music groups, REIGN and His City, and performed with them at churches and events in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Career

In the mid-2010s, Mills gained wider recognition after winning first place at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in New York City with a performance of “[...] Me Softly” by The Fugees. After relocating to Los Angeles, she worked as a background vocalist and touring singer. She has performed with artists such as Kelela and has appeared as a background vocalist on recorded live performances, including NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with Clipse.

Mills released her debut solo single, "Tweet and Delete", in 2020. She has lightly gained popularity on platforms such as Spotify and TikTok for her song "Yeah You (Thinkin Bout You)" released in 2020, followed by her debut studio album, Ascension, in 2021.
