Killing of Jamey Carney
On July 7, 2026, a 43-year-old American woman, Jamey Carney, was found killed in the home she rented and shared with her 13-year-old daughter in Killarney, Ireland. Her 28-year old boyfriend was named as a person of interest; after Carney's death, he fled the country. He was arrested in Jordan the following week, and in August an extradition agreement was reached by Irish and Jordanian authorities.
Background
Jamey Carney grew up in Westchester County, New York, U.S., and graduated from Byram Hills High School in Armonk in 2001. Of Irish-American descent, Carney decided to move to Ireland in 2021. While living in Ireland, Carney worked for a healthcare outsourcing firm. She was 43 years old at the time of death. The person of interest in the case, Carney's boyfriend, was a Jordanian national who came to Ireland as an asylum seeker in 2024, although his asylum application was denied. He had been living with Carney for several months.
Investigation
Carney's body was discovered in a bedroom of their rental home by her daughter on July 7. A post-mortem examination was completed on July 8, concluding that Carney had died by suffocation and had attempted to fight against her assailant. On July 9, police announced they were considering the investigation to be a [...] investigation. They also announced that they had a person of interest, who was "understood to be known to the victim," and who had already left the country. The person had left County Kerry in the early hours of July 7. According to RTÉ, the person of interest had taken a bus to Dublin and then flown to Turkey. Both Interpol and Europol were alerted of the situation by the Gardai.
The person of interest was arrested in Jordan by Jordanian authorities by July 13, 2026. However, sources were unable to confirm whether he had been arrested in connection with Carney's death; Irish authorities had not yet charged the person with any crimes, nor had they requested that the person of interest be arrested. The man was detained at a correctional centre in Jordan. In August, Irish and Jordanian authorities came to an extradition agreement, with plans to bring the man back to Ireland to stand trial.
