KHHB-LP
KHHB-LP, or "Hilo Five", is a low-power independent television station based in Hilo, Hawaii airing on NTSC VHF channel 5. On cable, the station is currently only available on the eastern half of the Big Island of Hawaii on Oceanic Cable channel 46 (analog cable) and 49 (digital cable). As of November 2007, KHHB-LP is the only low-power TV station in Hawaii to be carried on Oceanic Time Warner Cable.
KHHB-LP first hit the airwaves in December 2005 under the call letters K05LD. 1 The station took on its current calls in 2006.
The majority of KHHB's schedule is composed of a looping weather slideshow courtesy of AccuWeather accompanied by local music. The station also carries syndicated reruns of the classic shows Northern Exposure, Party of Five, The Nanny, Mad AbOUT You, Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch, Mission: Impossible and Soap during the late afternoons and prime time. In late December, reruns of Law and Order: Criminal Intent were phased into the schedule.
The station is currently in the process of starting up a nightly local newscast, one that would cater specifically to Hilo viewers. In January 2007 the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported 2 that a sister station for the western half of the island was also in the works, but as of December 2007 it has yet to surface.
KHHB is notable as the first television station in Hawaii to be based outside of Honolulu that has not signed on as a satellite or repeater of a Honolulu station, but rather as a true independent station in its own right.
