Kethleen Yep

Dr. Kathleen S. Yep is an assistant professor of Intercollegiate Department Of Asian American Studies and Sociology at Pitzer College, which is part of the Claremont Colleges in Southern California. Originally, from California, she is part of a multigenerational Chinese American family. Yep is part of the first generation of women in her family to graduate from college.

Yep attended the University of California, Berkley and received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D in Comparative Ethnic Studies. Yep received a two-year Carnegie Foundation Faculty Fellowship. Yep is currently interested in theories of race and gender, culture (sport and music), social stratification, education, and social movements.

In the six semesters that Yep have been teaching at Pitzer, students have spent approximately 3000 hours in communities applying and revising what they have learned in the classroom. Along with the California Center for Culture and Social Issues staff, these community partnerships range from after-school tutoring programs in underserved communities to first-generation college student retention efforts at the Claremont Colleges and adult literacy work with immigrant communities.

Yep has delivered over eight papers and published three articles. Along with Laurence Yep, Kathleen has published a children’s book: “The Dragon’s Child: A Story of Angel Island”.

Yep lives in San Gabriel, California.
