Kathmandu Valley under Mithila control

Kathmandu Valley under Mithila (Maithili: मिथिलाके अधिन काठमांडू उपत्यका) refers to some specific periods in the legend and history of the valley. According to legendary and historical texts or documents, the Valley of Kathmandu was under the control of the Mithila Kingdom in the Indian subcontinent during some specific periods of the subcontinent. During the legendary period of Ramayana, it was under the control of the King Janaka of the ancient Mithila Kingdom. Similarly during the 11th and 14th centuries CE, it was under the control of the Kings in the Mithila Kingdom. During the 11th century, it was under the control of King Nanya Deva of Mithila and during the 14th century, it was under the control of the King Harisingh Deva of Mithila. During the period of Mallas kings, Maithili became the court language in the valley and among elites.

History

In the 11th century, the Karnata King Nanyadeva of Mithila took control on the valley of Kathmandu. Similarly in the period of the 15th century, the King Harisinhadeva of Mithila took control on the valley and ruled his kingdom of Mithila from there later.

In the 15th century, the King Harisimhadeva of Mithila was driven into exile in the Kathmandu Valley due to the Turkish movements in the northern part of India. In the valley, he conquest Bhaktapur and became the king of Bhaktapur. After becoming the King of Bhaktapur, he installed his Kuldevi Goddess Taleju there. During these periods several Maithil scholars from the Mithila region settled in the valley of Kathmandu. After the death of the King Harisimhadeva, the valley was ruled by Mallas. His wife Devalalakshmidevi played important role in the politics of the valley after his death. Later in 1354, the wife of Harsimhadeva brought Jayasthiti Malla, a noble scholar from the region of Mithila, to marry her granddaughter Rajaladevi. He was established in the valley as the heir to the House of Tripura there. He later united the broken kingdoms of Bhaktapur, Kantipur and Patan. The Malla dynasty ruled the valley till the 18th century.

During the period of the 18th century in the subcontinent, the Gorkha King Shree Panch Badamaharajdhiraj Prithvinarayan Shah Dev conquest the Kathmandu Valley and formed the unified modern Hindu nation of Nepal. The victorious king Prithvi Narayan Shah termed his unified kingdom as Asal Hindustan which later in 1930 AD became Nepal.
