Jumping (Wing Commander)

In the fictional Wing Commander universe, Jumping is the process of using a jump point and a Jump drive in order to travel to another system.

Jumping is a widely-used method of fast-travel from system-to-system used by most of the factions in the Wing Commander universe, especially by the Terran Confederation and the Kilrathi. This method is much similar to Warping from the Star Trek universe. Only ships and smaller crafts with a jump drive are able to perform a jump.

After a jump, the ship's auto navigation system locks on to target objects in the system to make sure that the ship arrived at the intended destination. Jump points could unexpectedly close or shift. In rare cases, when one shifts, one may end up in a different location than intended. During jumps, space blurs when entering the jump and then snaps into focus again once one exits the jump. Jump anomalies are not uncommon in various parts of Confederation space.

There is an energy discharge when a ship jumps. Ships or smaller crafts that are too close to a ship that is jumping can be damaged by it. Also, force fields and gravity generators are un-operational during jumps. Because of this, the flight decks on carriers must be evacuated during the jump.
