J&S Construction Company
J&S Construction Company Inc. is a full-service general contractor, focusing on design/build and green building, operating out of Cookeville, Tennessee
History
J&S Construction actually got its start in 1926 when Pat Stites traded his construction skills for medical care for his wife. During the Great Depression, Stites started a sand and gravel partnership. This company was the foundation for what would later become J&S Construction Company, founded by Stites' son, John, in 1957.
J&S continued to grow and expand throughout the 1960s and by the 1970s, John's sons, Johnny and Jack, took over the day-to-day operations of the company. During the 1980s and 90s, J&S expanded its reach beyond Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland, taking on construction projects all across the Southeast.
Today, J&S counts nearly 100 craftsmen, engineers, architects and other construction professionals among its numbers. The company continues to take on projects in Cookeville (such as the Echo Valley splash pad), Nashville (including the renovation of five Sonic Drive-In restaurants) and beyond, ranging from commercial construction to military building contracts.
Building Green
J&S Construction has on staff accredited LEED professionals, certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Times Square retail center, located on Willow Avenue in Cookeville, was awarded a LEED Silver Certification by the USGBC.
Safety Record
While the construction industry is an inherently hazardous one, J&S Construction has put in place an award-winning safety program that has earned the Tennessee Commissioner's Award of Excellence for Workplace Safety.
The company record for man hours without a lost time accident is 500,000, which was set between 2003-2006. The previous company record was 291,368, which was set between 1998-2000.
