Joshua W. Luman

Born in 1981 Joshua W. Luman began painting in 1996 and by 1997 had developed what is now called the “figurative distortionism” style of expressionist art. His work has been exhibited at Trinity’s Eye Studios in East Windsor, CT, and has been a part of numerous group exhibitions throughout northern New England.

While living in seclusion on Cape Breton Island he started incorporating themes from the natural world and drew inspiration from primitive cave paintings to develop a system of universal symbolism. Straddling the world between dreams and waking life, Luman’s work addresses the things once revered and now forgotten, tapping into antiquity while staying vibrantly true to the concerns of contemporary society with his passionate and beautifully distorted images.

In addition to visual art, Luman is an accomplished poet, having released limited EDition volumes of his work: To Gustav and Other Poems in 1997, Neon Egypt in 2001 and Northern Moonlight in 2005. He has been a frequent participant and speaker on the New England poetry circuit and founded the writers group Poets of Northern Moonlight in 2001. Raised in Connecticut, Luman has lived in Canada, Ireland and the United States. He currently resides in Down East Maine.
