Early career

Joseph Clatworthy is based in Lincolnshire, initially trained and worked as a carpenter, and then went on to forge a career in the fashion industry but always painted from being a small child. Born into a working class family with an English father and Spanish mother, was unable to afford a formal education in the arts. He became good friends with former Robert Lenkiewicz pupil Piran Bishop and names him as both friend and mentor.

Portraits

Joseph Clatworthy paints under the name Llambias, working primarily in oil on canvas.

His paintings can sometimes be deemed as provocative in their nature, an example of this is his current project of a series of paintings of British Grenadier Guard amputee, injured in 2007 during the Afghanistan war, to highlight their plight and are set to be auctioned for the charity Help fo Heroes “These paintings are non-political. I’m not sending out a message. It’s a painting of a soldier back from Helmand Province with his medals. It’s good to highlight the injuries these boys are getting and to actually see the scarring.” Newark Advertiser “I have always followed what has been going on in Afghanistan,” says Joseph. “Whether you agree with what is happening or not, these guys are going out there and doing it out of their own will. They are not conscripted and I am full of admiration for that.” Lincolnshire Echo
