Joseph A. Carragher
Artist Joseph Carragher, since his first painting at age 11, has largely focused on the play of light and shadow to define his art.
After a career in engineering and construction, Mr. Carragher began a full time commitment to art in 2005 and has produced some 100 works in oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors.
Many of his canvases reflect images from overseas assignments to France, North Africa, South Africa, and South America. Examples of these works are l'Arlesienne, Mistral, Baguette for Breakfast, Zebra Drought, Johannesburg Youth, Plaza de Armas, Santiago, and a Walk on la Costenara.
Mr. Carragher studied life drawing and painting at the College of Marin, Brio Fine Art center and with Dorothy Reynolds in Johannesburg.
Recent work in oils and acrylics has concentrated on portraits, landscapes and his Historic Arizona series in which Mr. Carragher employs black and white archival Arizona photos to paint full color images on canvas. Paintings in this series include Unloading Wool at Holbrook, AZ, ca. 1902, Motoring on Apache Trail, ca. 1920 and others.
Mr. Carragher currently resides in Scottsdale, and continues studying oil painting with Chris Saper, Craig Birch, acrylic painting with Susan Falcon-Hargraves and pastel painting with Liz Kenyon and Donna Stenger.
