José Manuel Pozo
José Manuel Pozo Urzúa (8 September 1865 – 25 September 1913) was a Chilean farmer and politician affiliated with the Liberal Party. He served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1909 to 1912, representing Talca, Curepto and Lontué.
Biography
Pozo was born in Talca on 8 September 1865, the son of José Miguel Pozo Gaete and Valentina Urzúa Vergara. His brother, José Samuel Pozo Urzúa, also served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies. He married María Eugenia Armas Riquelme, with whom he had 13 children.
In 1892, Pozo received a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Chile. He subsequently devoted himself to agriculture, working as an administrator and owner of several estates, including the Aurora estate in San Clemente.
Political career
A member of the Liberal Party, Pozo served as a municipal councillor and mayor of San Clemente between 1903 and 1909.
In the parliamentary election of 7 March 1909, he was elected deputy for Talca, Curepto and Lontué for the 1909–1912 legislative period. In the Chamber of Deputies, he served on the Internal Police Committee and the Fourth Committee for the Examination of Electoral Claims.
Agriculture was one of the principal subjects of Pozo's parliamentary activity. On 18 July 1911, he introduced a bill seeking to place the city of Talca in the first category for the collection of licence fees, citing the city's population growth and industrial development. He was also a co-author of a bill authorising the president of the republic to issue Treasury notes.
Pozo died in Santiago on 25 September 1913, aged 48.
