John Tristram

John Tristram was a British-born bodybuilder. Born in 1935 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England, he came to the United States in the 1950s. Tristram was raised on a farm and rode a bicycle over the hilly English countryside which developed his legs. giving him an excellent foundation for bodybuilding. After serving a number of years in the British merchant marine, he emigrated to America, where his early training took place at Abe Goldberg's Gym in New York City. He appeared on many covers of fitness and physique magazines in the 50s and early 60s (particularly Physique Pictorial), often appearing as 'John Trenton'. Tristram made one short film for Bob Mizer's AMG and later directed a documentary film. His bodybuilding titles include the 1957 AAU Mr. Eastern America, 6th, medium class; the 1962 IFBB Mr. America, 1st, short class; the 1962 Mr. Venice Beach, Winner; the 1963 NABBA Mr. Universe, 2nd, medium class; the 1964 IFBB Mr. Universe, 2nd, short class and the 1974 WBBG Mr. International, 2nd short class. One of his training partners was Larry Scott. A highly cultured man, Tristram taught French at UCLA and died in 1985 in Los Angeles.
