John Merriam (military lawyer)

John Merriam is an United States military officer and lawyer. As of 2006, he holds the rank of captain.

He served as a military prosecutor in a year-long deployment in Iraq.

In his next assignment, he was appointed to defend Omar Khadr before the Guantanamo military commission.

Khadr's civilian lawyer, Muneer Ahmad, criticized Merriam's appointment, on the grounds of inexperience. Merriam supported this complaint. Lieutenant Colonel Colby Vokey was appointed as lead counsel representing Khadr, with Merriam continuing on the defense team.
