John Greenleaf Whittier Health Science Acabemy is a Middle School of the San Antonio Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas.
John Greenleaf Whittier Health Science Academy, an internal charter school of the San Antonio Independent School District. With a population of AbOUT 900 students, our campus offers a unique opportunity for our students to explore and learn about the many varied occupations available in the medical profession.
Through the partnership of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and as a companion to Edison High School's Health Professions Magnet School, our students have the privilege of such advanced and specialized study in the field of medicine at the middle school level. Professors, physicians and scientist from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio visit our students and provide field trip opportunities to their facilities, allowing our students to experience first hand what it entails to perform many of these health career jobs themselves.
Regardless of whether our students choose to pursue a career in the medical field, the technology, problem-solving and research skills honed here will serve them well in any university and in any profession they may enter. We feel confident you and your child will find what we have to offer here at Whittier invaluable to their education.
History
John Greenleaf Whittier was built in 1929. It housed the original Alva Edison High School, which at the time was a six-year junior-senior school. Increased enrollment and crowded conditions created the need to split the schools into two campuses.
In September of 1958 grades ten through twelve were moved into the new Edison High School building at 701 Santa Monica street. Grades seven through nine remained in the old building and became the new student body of John Greenleaf Whittier Junior High School. When SAISD moved 9th grade to the high school John Greenleaf Whittier became a middle school housing grades 6th, 7th and 8th.
In the fall of 2003 students moved into temporary facilities next to the school building while construction is being completed. The new school opened in August 2007 as Whittier Health Science Academy.
School Uniforms
All Whittier Academy students are required to wear school uniforms. Students are required to wear white or black collared shirts and khaki bottoms.
