John Chow-Hoon
John Chow-Hoon (? - 1988) was a prominent martial artist and greatly respected practitioner of Jujitsu and Kenpo. His brother was William Kwai Sun Chow, a forefather of many Kenpo schools now existing throughout the United States.
Chow-Hoon studied Danzan-ryu Jujitsu initially under the tutelage of Sig Kufferath who was the recognized grandmaster of Danzan-ryu after Henry Seishiro Okazaki passed away. Chow-Hoon also studied Kenpo with his brothers Frank and William Chow. He received his Shodan in Kenpo in 1943 and his Shodan in Jujitsu in 1945.
Chow-Hoon was also known to moonlight with Charles Kalani, Jr. also known as Professor Toru Tanaka in professional wrestling, using the pseudonym Mr. Kim.
In 1978 Chow-Hoon, Wally Jay, Willy Cahill, and Carl Beaver created Jujitsu America. Through this association they would seek to enhance the skill level by addressing modern realities .
He went on to develop his own variation of Kosho-ryu Kenpo and acquired a devoted following of students throughout the United States, particularly in the Monterey Bay area where his system survives today.
Chow-Hoon’s highest ranking student was James Muro who is the gatekeeper of the association Goshin-Jitsu Chow-Hoon.
Chow-Hoon was recognized as Judan in both Danzan-ryu Jujitsu and Kosho-ryu Kenpo.
