Johan Wilhelm Klüver
Johan Wilhelm Klüver (born 1910 in Stavanger, Norway) was a Norwegian sailor who was highly decorated after the Second World War. During the war, Kluver sailed as a first mate at the two ships D / S Lysefjord and M / S General Fleischer. In 1943, Klüver and his crew at the D / S Lysefjord were attacked by Japanese submarines off the coast of Cuba. Klüver was among the survivors of the attack, although three of his comrades were killed in the fatal attack.
Following this incident, Klüver did not leave the sea, but kept going on the ship M / S Lysefjord where he continoued to be a gunner and first mate. After a brief stay in London, Klüver was sent home to Stavanger in 1946.
After the war Klüver was decorated with "The Norwegian War Medal", "Medal of Effort During the War" and the "Haakon VII Frihetsmedalje" (H7) medal. The H7 Medal is the highest accomondation a civilian can receive in Norway. Since the award was started by the Norwegian King Haakon VII on 1946, only 27 Norwegians have received the medal, and amongst them Klüver is the only war sailor with the "H7" medal. Klüver was nominated amongst his own shipmates. In the rules of awarding the medal it says: "The person receiving this medal must have obtained extreme dangr and risked it owns life in saving and / or protecting another human being life during a especially dangerous situation". Due to the gradiaton of the papers "no one" knows what Klüver exactly did. Klüver himself has also declined every question about interview about his heroic effort durint the war. Papers found in Nortraship offices shows that Klüver was described as a calm, hard working and selfless man with concern for others before himself.
After the war Klüver again sailed as a first mate in Bergvald Bergesen Tanking Company until he retired.
