Joel Gamoran (born 1985) is an American chef and television host. In addition to his position as Sur La Table's national chef, he hosts the cooking series Scraps on FYI.
Early life and education
Gamoran was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. He graduated from the Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003. After earning a degree in restaurant management from the University of Connecticut in 2007, he studied at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, California, graduating in 2008.
Career
Gamoran initially worked as a restaurant chef in San Francisco and Seattle, before becoming a chef instructor and then resident chef at Sur La Table in Kirkland, Washington. He relocated to the company's New York City location in 2011. By 2014, he was the East Coast senior resident chef at Sur La Table, and was later named the company's national chef.
In 2009, Gamoran created his first Web series, Humbly Northwest. The series followed Gamoran around the Pacific Northwest, highlighting regional farmers and recipes. In 2014 he began appearing in cooking segments on daytime television shows, including Today and Good Morning America. In December 2016, Katie Couric and her husband John Molner announced plans for Full Plate with Katie & John, a cooking Web series in collaboration with Sur La Table, with Gamoran as the series' chef. The four-episode first season premiered on the Sur La Table website on January 1, 2017, with a focus on preparing healthy meals at home. The six-episode second season premiered in March 2017.
In April 2017, it was announced that the FYI network and Sur La Table were producing Scraps, a reality culinary series hosted by Gamoran. He is also an executive producer, along with Katie Couric. The show follows him as he travels across the United States, meeting other chefs and creating meals based around food scraps and other unique ingredients that are typically discarded. On each episode Gamoran has less than a day to source ingredients, build a menu and create a meal. It is intended to address the issue of food waste in the US. The 10-episode series premiered on FYI on May 21, 2017.
