Tate serves as a heavy equipment operator and explosives expert with the United States Naval Construction Battalions (known as the Seabees). Governor Phil Scott appointed former Vermont Retail and Grocers Association President Jim Harrison to the vacated position.

As a legislator, he advocated for the Second Amendment, for parental consent relating to mental health counseling for minors, and against sanctuary state policies in Vermont. Tate was the only Republican legislator who did not endorse Phil Scott in the 2016 gubernatorial Republican primary election. The American Conservative Union awarded him an 85% lifetime average rating (2015-16).
