Jerlan Omarchanov

Jerlan Omarchanovis a German doctor. Omarchanov has received scrutiny for practicing medicine in Germany after his Norwegian medical authorization was revoked. A 2022 NRK investigation reported that Omarchanov had worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Norway, despite not having that specialisation.

Career

Omarchanov started his medical career in Germany where he has been a licensed doctor since 1992. In 2008, he moved to Flekkefjord in Norway and started working at a local hospital. Omarchanov worked at hospitals in Flekkefjord, Sørlandet, Bergen, Haukeland, Hammerfest, and Kristiansand.

In 2021, Norwegian authorities revoked his medical authorisation. The Norwegian health board stated that Omarchanov "carried out major orthopedic surgery on seven patients without being a certified specialist or having enough practical experience," resulting in "irreversible harm to many of [the patients]". Norwegian courts acquitted him of "gross negligence" in 2022, instead placing blame on his workplaces for failing to follow proper routines. Omarchanov relocated back to Germany, where he has worked as a surgeon, most recently working at Praxisklinik für Chirurgie und Traumatologie in Markdorf and in Bavaria.

Journalistic investigation

An investigation by NRK found Omarchanov worked as the chief of surgery in orthopedics at Flekkefjord though he did not have this specialisation at the time.

Personal life

Omarchanov graduated from a university in Kazakhstan. He holds German citizenship.
