JBA Consulting is an environmental engineering consultancy company, based in the United Kingdom.

JBA is one of the UK's leading environmental and engineering consultancies, with a history going back to 1995. The consultancy is based in the UK and provides flood risk and environmental management services worldwide. JBA has a network of 13 offices throughout the UK (including Scotland and Wales) and Ireland.

History

The firm was founded in 1995 by civil engineer Jeremy Benn, and was named Jeremy Benn Associates. The firm quickly grew, undertaking railway and flood risk management projects throughout the UK, and became a limited company in 1998, now trading as JBA Consulting.

Modern Company

The company has extended its scope of work to include GIS software development and international flood risk planning.

JBA Consulting was awarded the prestigious New Civil Engineer, Association of Consulting Engineers Consultant of the Year award for medium size firms for 2010. New Civil Engineer is the weekly magazine of the Institution of Civil Engineers, (ICE) the UK and a co-founder of the British Construction Industry Awards.

Notable Projects

  • Draft New Guidance On Local Flood Risk: JBA have drafted (for the Environment Agency) guidance to help local authorities across England and Wales assess the risk of flooding in their areas.
  • Scottish Flood DeFence Assets Database: JBA have built (for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and control the website that shows the details of the condition, location and protection provided by the Flood prevention and protection schemes in Scotland.
  • Probabilistic Flood Model for France: In collaboration with Guy Carpenter and Intermap Technologies, JBA have produced river-flow modelling of 80,000 km of the French river network using JFlow (JBA's 2-D hydraulic model).
  • WaPUG IUD Modelling Guide: JBA has assisted with the development of the Integrated Urban Drainage (IUD) approach to planning or managing an urban drainage systems in collaboration with the CIWEM.
  • Projects for the National Trust: Two projects have recently featured in the National Trust’s members’ magazine. The innovative Holnicote project near Minehead and the Tarn Moss restoration project at Malham Tarn, Yorkshire, were led by JBA's sister company Maslen Environmental in Saltaire.
  • CIRIA Design Guide: The CIRIA Culvert Design and Operation Guide (CDOG) has been co-written by JBA Principal Engineer Dr. Amanda Kitchen. This is a comprehensive guide to the whole-life management of culverts which replaces the Culvert Design Guide.
  • Fish Pass Design: JBA Consulting has recently expanded its portfolio of fish pass design work by supporting the Don Catchment Rivers Trust in producing designs for elver passes on the Rivers Rother River Don. Money made available by DEFRA to deliver Water Framework Directive objectives relating to fish passage and specific objectives highlighted in the Eel Management Plan for the Humber River Basin District, has led to designs for eel passes being produced for three weirs.
  • Fluvial Design Guide: The Environment Agency have announced the launch of the Fluvial Design Guide advising on the design process for in-river engineering and maintenance work, for which JBA have provided the Hydrology content for the purposes of designing or assessing the hydraulic performance of works in the fluvial environment. The Fluvial Design Guide is a handbook for flood and coastal erosion risk managers, including Local Authorities, Internal Drainage Boards and consultants, and aims to provide enough information to enable its readers to understand the fundamentals of the problem faced and where expert advice should be sought.
  • RIBA Guide to Designing for Flood Risk: JBA have worked alongside KCA Architects in the production of the RIBA’s (Royal Institute of British Architects) guide to Designing for Flood Risk which takes a design-led approach to addressing flood risk. The guide informs of the issues that flood risk gives rise to, provides an overview of current policy and legislation, and outlines potential design responses for architects, urban designers, landscape architects and planners. Designing for Flood Risk is a component of the RIBA’s Climate Change Tools, a package of guidance developed to encourage architects to engage with the issue of climate change and to help them both mitigate and adapt to the challenges of global warming including flood risk.
