Jazz Hamilton

Jazz Hamilton (born 1965 in Caguas, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican Classical crossover recording artist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and MusicAL director. Hamilton has performed across five continents and released more than twelve studio albums spanning classical, jazz, Latin jazz, smooth jazz, and salsa. He is also the creator of the Revolution 65 Saxophone, a professional instrument made to his specifications.

Early life and education

Jazz Hamilton was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1965. From an early age he was exposed to a wide range of musical genres — from Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Dexter Gordon, to Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, to Tito Puente, Carlos Gardel, and Tito Rodríguez. His discovery of Coleman Hawkins's recording of "Body and Soul" sparked his lifelong dedication to the saxophone.

At age eleven, Hamilton began formal musical studies with Professor Pedro Luis Jimenez in Caguas, then continued at Escuela Libre Antonio Paoli with Jesús Peña, who recommended him to Professor Leslie Lopez at the Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan. Lopez accepted Hamilton as his only commuter student and introduced him to the classical saxophone repertoire, later presenting him to Master Reedman Lito Peña, who provided advanced master classes in interpretation and technique.

At age fourteen, Hamilton began his professional career with the Caguas Jazz Workshop under the direction of Andrés "Maco" Torres, also performing classical saxophone recitals for the Instituto de Cultura in Puerto Rico.

At sixteen, Hamilton was awarded a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was placed in the third year and studied with Joe Allard — one of the most recognized saxophone pedagogues in the world. Allard taught both concert and jazz schools of saxophone, shaping the foundation for Hamilton's Classical Crossover career. During this period, Hamilton performed duets with virtuosos Al Gallodoro and Jimmy Abato.

Hamilton subsequently studied simultaneously at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, concentrating on music performance and improvisation under Jackie McLean. Red Rodney, who was present at Hamilton's audition, invited him to join his quintet within a month.

Early professional career

After his conservatory training, Hamilton performed extensively as lead alto saxophonist with artists including Tito Puente and Giovanni Hidalgo, as well as Sammy Davis Jr., Hilton Ruiz, Red Rodney, and José José. He also served as Musical Director for salsa artists including Marvin Santiago, Domingo Quiñones, and Andy Montañez.

In 1989, Hamilton launched his solo recording career, performing in France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Central and South America, the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Recordings

In 1990, Hamilton recorded his debut solo album Solar Rain, a classical crossover Jazz release, followed by Fantasy, Love in D Minor, and Inolvidable.

In 2000, he created the concert conceptHamilton y Las Estrellas del Pueblo, reviving traditional salsa styles of the 1960s–1990s. A full tour launched in 2004–2005 covered Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the United States.

Hamilton has performed with orchestras including the Hartford Symphony, Singapore Symphony, Florence Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, and Perth Symphony.

In 2005, IMPRE Media's La Prensa selected Hamilton as the face of its 25th anniversary celebrations, hiring him to represent the company across its seven main markets.

In 2008, he released My Soul, a blend of jazz, classical, Latin, and contemporary jazz, which was featured on the cover of Latin Beat Magazine with the article "Born to Play Jazz in the Land of Salsa". The same year he released Hamilton y Las Estrellas del Pueblo Live. In 2009 he recorded Smooth Holidays, and in 2011 the holiday album Jingle Jazz.

In 2014, Hamilton released Within Jazz and Romance (Entre Jazz y Romance) on AKUSTIK Records, featuring his arrangement of Concierto de Aranjuez (adagio) for alto saxophone and orchestra.

In 2016, he released Adagio under his independent label HMER International, featuring Lourdes Robles performing classical music for the first time in her career.

From 2017 to 2019, Hamilton toured Europe, Southern Asia, and Australia with his CARNEVALE tour while recording the album Nocturne.

Released in summer 2022, Nocturne features nine original arrangements blending classical works by Beethoven, Chopin, Vivaldi, Charlie Chaplin, and Velázquez with Hamilton's contemporary orchestrations. The single Smile (based on Charlie Chaplin's composition) was released in March 2021, accompanied by a music video.

In 2024, Hamilton released the single Desafinado featuring vocalist Denise Figueroa under the SUPRANOVA project.

Revolution 65 Saxophone

In 2011, Hamilton paused touring to spend two years researching and developing the Revolution 65 Saxophone — a handmade professional instrument built to his specifications. The instrument was received enthusiastically by saxophonists worldwide. During the same period, Hamilton also designed a custom ebony wood mouthpiece.

Television

In 2006, Hamilton became executive producer of the TV talk show Elizabeth en Tu Agenda, presented by his wife Elizabeth Hernández, which broadcast weekly on three networks including Telemundo in the Central Florida market.

TIMELESS — A Suite for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra

Since 2022, Hamilton has devoted himself to composing TIMELESS — A Suite for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra, conceived as a musical tribute to the 250th anniversary of the United States. Through nine movements, Hamilton blends classical orchestration with jazz, Latin, and Indigenous-Caribbean influences, paying tribute to veterans and celebrating America's multicultural heritage. The work premiered in Lakeland, Florida in June 2026 at the RP Funding Center.
