On March 7, 2007, he was appointed as deputy campaign manager for the Mitt Romney Presidential Campaign. Roe was forced to resign from the Romney campaign amid questions about his involvement with a scandal involving Feeney's trip to Scotland with convicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff. While Roe maintained he knew little or nothing about who may have paid for the trip, others asserted that, serving as Feeney's chief of staff, Roe likely knew more about the sponsorship of the golf trip. The Justice Department is currently investigation the Feeney/Abramoff/Roe connections.

Roe is the son of Jerry D. Roe, a former executive director of the Michigan Republican Party.
